So filing a tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is important for low-income individuals because it allows them to access various government benefits and credits, even if they have little or no income tax to pay. Even if no income was earned during the year, filing a tax return is essential to ensure eligibility for various benefits.

WHO SHOULD FILE A TAX RETURN

  • Canadian Citizens
  • Permanent Residents
  • Newcomers to Canada (Immigrants) 
  • Refugees (protected persons)
  • Temporary residents: foreign students, foreign workers
  • A spouse or common-law partner and dependents who move to Canada to live 
  • Receiving the following payments:  Canada child benefit (CCB), GST⁄HST credit, Guaranteed income supplement (GIS)

WHO are eligible

All adult Canadians should file a tax return every year even if they have no income. 

You must have

  1. Last year tax document (NOA 2022) if you lived in Canada. However, it is not applicable if you arrived in Canada in 2023, 
  2. A valid Canadian photo ID.
  3. An active phone number.  
  4. Email account. You must reply to our email promptly so that we can complete the tax file on time. 

MODEST INCOME

We only help individuals with a modest income and a simple tax situation. Check the family income information below:

1 Person                                      $35,000/ year

2 Persons                                   $45,000/ year

3 Persons                                   $47,000/ year

4 Persons                                   $50,000/ year

5 Persons                                   $52,500/ year

More than 5 Persons                $52,500, plus $2,500 per                   

                                                     additional family member

All Adults

  • Canadian Citizens
  • Permanent Residents
  • Newcomers (with SIN #)
  • Refugees (with SIN #)

Students and youth who earned over $15,000 last year


Note:

Newcomers, including refugees, are required to file a tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) even if they have only been in the country for a few months and may not have worked yet. 

People NOT Eligible

Please DO NOT contact us if your situation is as follows:

  • Self-employment
  • Business income
  • Property owner*
  • Interest income*
  • Any income not reported on a T slip*
  • Split pension income*
  • Bankruptcy
  • Lost or missing tax slips*
  • Lost of missing NOA last year*


We don't file any tax return for 

- a deceased person*

- an incarcerated person*


* You might be eligible with other tax clinics.  

Tax slips/ receipts

You ONLY contact us if you have required tax slips/ receipts and supporting documents, for instance: 

- T4 employment income

- T5007 social assistance 

- T4A (P), T4A (OAS) pension income 

- Rent receipt from Landlord (legal documents)

- Medical expenses (with total cost)

- T2202 tuition fees 

- Student loan interest etc.

- Bank direct deposit information / VOID cheque (if applicable)
